What happens when you leave behind a high-powered corporate career, walk away from everything you thought defined you, and choose stillness over strategy?

In the latest episode of The Film Hub Off-Script Podcast, host Lauren Fehlhaber sits down with world-renowned meditation teacher and bestselling author davidji to unpack a life journey that redefines success, not through hustle, but through presence.

A Wake-Up Call in a Cardboard Box

Before he became a spiritual guide to thousands, davidji lived a very different life. He was deep in the fast-paced world of mergers and acquisitions, commuting to the 82nd floor of Tower Two at the World Trade Center.

Then everything changed.

After 9/11 — an event that spared his life but shattered his worldview — davidji found himself walking the streets of New York, lost and emotionally hollow. It was during this time that a homeless man reached out from a cardboard box and asked him a single, life-altering question:

“What’s going to be on your tombstone?”

That moment became a spiritual catalyst.

Letting Go of the Old to Embrace the Unknown

Shortly after that encounter, his wife encouraged him to attend a meditation retreat with Deepak Chopra in Oxford, England. It was there, through long hours of silence and deep reflection, that he reconnected with a joy he hadn’t felt in over a decade.

One powerful line from the ancient Bhagavad Gita sealed his transformation:

“Yogastha kuru karmani” or in English: “Establish yourself in the present moment and then perform action”

davidji knew he had found his calling, but it didn’t stop with personal healing. His friends saw the light in him and pushed him to teach. He began studying, traveling, and eventually joined the Chopra Center in Carlsbad, CA, where he apprenticed for 10 years and became Dean of Chopra Center University.

Meditation Meets the Real World

davidji’s impact now reaches far beyond yoga studios and retreat centers. His work has been embraced by Fortune 500 companies, military veterans, law enforcement, trauma survivors, and individuals from all walks of life.

He’s recorded over 1,000 guided meditations, trained over a thousand teachers worldwide, and continues to emphasize one simple but powerful idea:

The magic of meditation doesn’t happen when your eyes are closed, sitting in the dark.

“The magic of meditation happens when you’re out here, in the rest of the world, interacting with people where you really can help someone who’s struggling, help support someone who could use a hand.”
